Deconstructing a Powerhouse Face Oil Serum
Increasingly, people are beginning to wonder what’s in their favorite products — whether it’s the food they eat or the products they put on their skin. We too often wonder, check ingredient lists, and do our best to avoid using weird and unnatural sounding ingredients on our skin – our body’s largest organ.
The newest addition to our line is a powerhouse: the Super Couple ultra luxe facial oil. The Super Couple is a multi-correctional formula that combines the powerful benefits of supercritical chia oil as well as natural astaxanthin, (a microalgae plant that gives salmon and flamingos their brilliant pink/coral hue!) We thought you’d like to know more about the individual ingredients in the Super Couple, and the purpose behind each ingredient, and what it adds to the end result. So let’s run down the ingredients, and take a more in-depth look at what they do:
Super Critical Chia Oil: Chia (or salvia hispanica) is a hearty plant from the mint family. The best, most nutrient-dense chia is grown 10 degrees north or south of the equator. It is chock full of nutrition, and has 8x the omegas as wild-caught salmon, 7x the vitamin c of oranges, and 3x the antioxidants as blueberries. Time Magazine recently wrote (in March 2015) that chia was one of the healthiest foods of all time.
Natural Astaxanthin: Astaxanthin of nature’s strongest antioxidants and is widely used (and loved) as an internal supplement. We are now harnessing its game-changing benefits topically, for the skin. Astaxanthin is derived from the microalgae plant, and is clinically proven to be 65x stronger than Vitamin C in combating free radicals. Astatxanthin, gives the oil it’s pink/coral hue and imparts and immediate, beautiful subtle glow to the skin.
Frankincense: (also called Olibanum) is an ancient botanical renowned for helping to address hyperpigmentation, and to tone and tighten the skin. Frankincense is a sought-after essential oil that increases blood circulation, which allows our face oil serum to penetrate the skin’s layers. This ancient ingredient is acquired from trees of the Boswellia genus in the family Burseraceae, or more particularly the Boswellia sacra (commonly called the Olibanum tree.)
Myrrh Essential Oil: Sourced from a dried resin extracted from the Myrrh tree. Native to Northern Africa and the Middle East it has a light bark, knotted branches and small white flowers. You may have heard of myrrh- it was one of the precious gifts offered by the three wise men in the Bible (along with Frankincense that’s also in the Super Couple) and gold (not in the Super Couple) The word “myrrh” comes from “murr” which means “bitter” in Arabic, referring to the resins bitter taste. Myrrh has been sought after since ancient times for its medicinal uses as an anti-inflammatory, and highly valued for how it prevents the signs of aging (i.e. smooth’s wrinkles) and how it soothes the most parched and dry skin.
Cistus Essential Oil: Is also known as ‘Rock Rose’ or ‘Labdanum’ and is taken from the leaves of wild crafted (Cistus ladaniferus). A potent (yet gentle) ingredient in The Super Couple, it is renowned for its wound healing abilities, Cistus has also proven effective for chronic conditions like psoriasis and eczema and highly beneficial for reducing inflammation in acne prone and oily skin.
Australian Sandalwood: (Santalum spicatum) Comes from the trees in a semi-arid region of Southwest Australia. It is prized for its soft and woody aroma, but also provides wonderful skincare benefits. It tightens and smooth’s the skin and provides relief from inflammation while also serving as an antiseptic.
Carrot Seed Oil: Is the essential oil extract from the seed of the carrot plant (Daucus carota). We are most familiar with the orange carrot in the U.S, but there are other varieties such as purple, yellow, white, and red carrots. Carrot seed oil extract is rich in Vitamin A and an excellent cell regenerator and wrinkle softener. It’s great for oily and combination skin, providing just enough moisture without clogging the pores.
Chamomile (Roman and German): Another part of the synergistic multi-correctional formula in The Super Couple is both Roman and German Chamomile. German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) calms dry, irritated or flaky skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis or dermatitis; promotes healing and regeneration of damaged skin tissue. Both German and Roman Chamomile (Anthemis nobilis) are both highly therapeutic, with anti-inflammatory and antibacterial benefits and a calming effect on the skin, mind, and body.
Rosewood: The French are well known for using rosewood oil for skin cell regeneration, improving skin elasticity, and cell stimulation for mature, wrinkled skin. The oil is extracted from the wood of the tree known by its scientific name Aniba rosaeodora. Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora) assists in cell regeneration, and it is safe to use on all skin types. It also helps to lessen and soften the appearance of fine lines and scarring. Add to all this, rosewood is renowned for its wound healing properties, and has also been used to treat acne, blackheads and helps to control future breakouts due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
Lavender: (Lavandula) Is well known for its aromatherapy benefits but is derived from the mint family with around thirty nine species of the Lavandula plant that is grown all over the world. The most commonly cultivated species is ‘Lavandula angustifolia’ and is what we consider to be the lavender we are most familiar with today. Lavender is used for its anti-inflammatory, calming, and anti-fungal properties on the skin. Lavender has been used to help reduce scarring and speeds up wound healing. Lavender also increases blood flow, which brings much needed oxygen to the cells, which in turn leads to a healthy and frequent cell turnover.
Jasmine Absolute: A rare and sought after ingredient, Jasmine Absolute addresses a myriad of skin concerns, from young to mature, oily to drier types. It promotes skin elasticity and increases cellular renewal. Jasmine Absolute comes from a nocturnally blooming flower, is antibacterial and has anti-inflammatory properties to help rebalance the skin, It also works to calm and heal the skin, and can be used for even the most sensitive skin,
Bulgarian Rose Absolute: It is well known for its sensuous aroma, but Bulgarian Rose Absolute has also been used since ancient times to heal and transform even the most sensitive skin. Grown in the ‘Rose Valley’ in Bulgaria, It acts as a rejuvenator of the cells, an antiseptic and an anti-inflammatory, which can soothe and heal various skin conditions. Some even use the scent as a way to help reduce stress- and others may use it as an aphrodisiac.
